CBEP is yours! You have the pen in your hands to write its beautiful history pages. d’histoire est entre vos mains.

Our History

The African-Canadian population often does not enjoy the benefits of preventive medicine because of its low utilization of health services when they feel apparently healthy and because of ethno-cultural barriers. The health care for immigrants is more effective if caregivers and clients are of the same ethnic origin, have the same cultural sensitivities and speak the same language.
In reaction to the lack of culturally adapted services to this particularly at high risk population in terms of health and wellness in Alberta, the Wellness and Prevention Centre for African Canadians of Alberta was created in Edmonton, on November 4th, 2015 as a non-profit organization with head office in Edmonton.
In July 2017, the Constitution and By-Laws of the organization were revised for a governance at the forefront of the needs of African Canadians of Alberta and the community good governance legislations, and its short name was changed from CBEPACA to CBEP

Our Mandate

The Wellness and Prevention Center for the Afro-Canadians of Alberta (CBEP) is a multi-sectoral and multi-vocational not-for-profit organization that aims to raise the awareness of the members of the African-Canadian community on problems that can affect the state of their health. CBEP raises awareness and shares information on such health issues as: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mental illness, seniors’ health and abuse, drug and alcohol use. All this to bring about a change in lifestyle or behavior of the members of the African-Canadian community of Alberta to help improve the state of their health. CBEP also works to facilitate the social reintegration of African-Canadian offenders through a community-based approach that takes into account the cultural sensitivities of each African-Canadian community group and with various partners in Alberta.
